The series began as a lengthy set of shounen-ai light novels by the author Mizuna Kuwabara, and it has also been recreated in (a for the most part highly trunkated) anime and manga form. In any form, Mirage of Blaze has a highly complicated story that is deeply rooted in Japanese history, partnered with a healthy mix of all things occult and spiritual. However its heart lies in its characters, and that is especially true of the deeply twisted relationship shared by Naoe and Takaya. Master and servant. Protector and protected. Partners in arms. Liars and murderes. Judge and condemned. Mutually and devistatingly obsessed. All these simple setences could be used to describe the relationship between these two, but none of them will ever fully cover it. This is a pair who have been locked in a struggle for dominance and love for generations. And yet, there's something so compelling about that . . .
